Convertible Term Life Insurance: The Basics
6 min read
Convertible term life insurance combines the low cost of term with the option to convert to permanent coverage later, without a medical exam. It is the answer to a common problem: you want cheap coverage today, but you are unsure whether your health will allow you to buy lifelong coverage when you can better afford it.
How conversion works
During the conversion window - often the first 10 years or until a set age - you can exchange all or part of your term policy for a permanent policy, usually whole life or universal life, from the same insurer. Because there is no new medical underwriting, your health at conversion does not affect your eligibility, though your new premium is based on your age at conversion.
New premium = permanent-policy rate at your age at conversion
Why the conversion option is valuable
- It locks in your future insurability regardless of health changes.
- It avoids the risk that a diagnosis makes permanent coverage impossible to buy.
- It lets you start with affordable term and decide later - you pay only slightly more for the option.
The catch to understand
Conversion is nearly always into the insurer's own permanent products, which may cost more than policies available on the open market. The premium is based on your age at conversion, so the later you convert, the higher it is. And most conversion rights expire - miss the window and the option is gone.
Who it fits
Young families who need maximum coverage now and may want lifelong coverage later; people with a family history of conditions that could appear later in life; and business owners whose buy-sell obligations may become permanent.
Frequently asked questions
Can I convert only part of the policy? Often yes - many riders let you convert a portion and keep the rest as term.
Does conversion raise my premium immediately? It raises it to the permanent-policy rate for your current age, which is usually several times the term premium.
