Rideshare Insurance: The Coverage Gap
6 min read
Driving for a rideshare or delivery app creates a coverage gap that many drivers only discover after a claim is denied. Personal auto policies are written for personal use and often exclude driving for hire. The app's own coverage is real but limited, and it does not apply during every stage of a trip. The result is a period where the driver is effectively exposed.
The three periods of a trip
- App on, waiting for a request. The app typically provides only limited liability coverage, and your personal policy may exclude commercial use. This is the biggest gap.
- En route to pick up a rider. The app's liability coverage rises, but coverage for your own vehicle may still be limited.
- Passenger on board. The app's coverage is at its highest, including liability and often some damage to your car, subject to a deductible.
Your exposure = damage not covered by the app + your personal-policy exclusion
How to close the gap
- A rideshare endorsement. Many insurers offer an add-on that extends your personal policy to cover the app-on, waiting-for-a-request period and sometimes damage to your vehicle during a trip.
- A commercial auto policy for gig work. Broader but more expensive, best for drivers who work many hours.
- Confirm before you drive. Ask your insurer in writing whether driving for an app is covered, and which periods.
Delivery apps count too
Food and package delivery creates the same gap. Some personal policies exclude delivery entirely, and the app for a delivery may provide less coverage than a rideshare app. Do not assume delivery is treated the same as transporting passengers.
Frequently asked questions
Does the app's insurance cover my car? Usually only collision during a trip with a passenger, and often with a large deductible. Your own vehicle's damage while waiting for a request is frequently uncovered.
Will my insurer drop me for driving for an app? Some will non-renew if they discover commercial use that was not disclosed. Disclose it and get the endorsement.
