RV Insurance: Full-Time vs Weekend Rates
6 min read
Recreational vehicle insurance splits into two very different products: coverage for a part-time RV used for weekend trips, and coverage for a full-time RV that serves as someone's home. The first is priced like a large vehicle; the second adds homeowners-style liability and personal property protection, which raises both the complexity and the cost.
Part-time versus full-time
- Part-time. Priced by vehicle value, type and mileage, similar to a large auto. May be added to an auto policy or written standalone.
- Full-time. Adds dwelling-style liability, personal contents, loss of use and sometimes full-timer liability that a standard auto policy cannot provide.
Premium ≈ value × type factor × usage (part/full) + liability + contents
What drives the premium
- Type. Class A motorhomes are priced differently from travel trailers and fifth wheels.
- Value. A high-value diesel pusher costs far more than a modest trailer.
- Usage. Full-time use and high mileage raise the rate.
- Storage. Where the RV is kept when not in use affects theft and weather risk.
- Driving record. Same as any vehicle.
A gap that catches people out
A travel trailer pulled by a personal vehicle raises a question of which policy responds in a crash: the tow vehicle's policy or the trailer's. Coverage often depends on the tow vehicle's liability, so confirm exactly how your combination is covered before you assume it is handled.
Seasonal use and lay-up
RV owners who store the vehicle for months can often reduce premiums by declaring non-use periods, similar to how a boat lay-up period works.
Frequently asked questions
Is RV insurance mandatory? Liability coverage is required to drive it on public roads; comprehensive and collision are optional but wise on a financed or valuable unit.
Does my auto policy cover a rented RV? Sometimes partially, but limits may be low. A dedicated policy is safer for a rental.
