Umbrella Insurance: Do You Need It?

6 min read

An umbrella policy is extra liability coverage that stacks on top of your auto and home policies once their limits are used up. It exists because liability limits that felt large when you bought them can be small compared with a serious judgment, and because a lawsuit can reach not just your insurance but your savings, your home equity and your future wages.

How the layers work

Your auto or home policy pays first, up to its liability limit. The umbrella then pays the next layer, up to its own limit. If your auto liability is $250,000 and you carry a $1 million umbrella, a $1.1 million judgment leaves you responsible for $0 within the combined limit, whereas without the umbrella you would owe $850,000 personally.

Your exposure = judgment − (primary liability limit + umbrella limit)

Why it is so inexpensive

Umbrellas only respond after large primary claims are exhausted, which are rare. That is why a $1 million personal umbrella often costs $150 to $300 a year - roughly the price of a streaming subscription for coverage that protects everything you own.

Who needs one most

  • Anyone with meaningful net worth or a high income that a judgment could attach to.
  • Homeowners with a pool, trampoline or dog, which raise liability risk.
  • People who host gatherings, drive frequently, or own rental property.
  • Teen drivers on the policy, who raise the odds of a serious at-fault accident.

A requirement to watch

Insurers require minimum underlying liability limits before they will sell you an umbrella - commonly $250,000 per person and $500,000 per accident on auto, and $300,000 on home. If your primary limits are lower, you may need to raise them first.

Frequently asked questions

Does an umbrella cover my business? No. Personal umbrellas exclude business activity. A business needs its own liability and umbrella coverage.

Does it cover a rented car abroad? Coverage varies; check the policy. Many exclude certain foreign rentals.
